Inglewood : Terminal Ground Breaking

City officials will break ground next Thursday for an air freight cargo terminal that will be the second major facility to locate in the Century Redevelopment area, at the corner of Century Boulevard and Yukon Avenue.

CF AirFreight, a subsidiary of Consolidated Freightways Inc., is expected to open the city’s largest air freight terminal by next fall, Inglewood Redevelopment Director Lew Pond said.

When completed, the $8 million facility will bring about 115 jobs into the area, he said. However, he added, the company is not required to hire Inglewood residents.

The 78,000 square foot facility is the first development in the Century area to displace large numbers of residents. Pond said. More than 180 families were moved out of the impoverished area over the summer and given money to relocate in other areas, he said.

The Century redevelopment area is bounded by Manchester Boulevard on the north, 102nd Street on the south, Prairie Avenue on the west and Crenshaw Boulevard on the east.

Because the largely residential area sits under the noisy south runway approach to Los Angeles International Airport, city officials have received funds from the Federal Aviation Administration to redevelop the area for light industrial use.

If funding holds out, Pond said, the area should be fully redeveloped by the year 2000.
