Call boxes on the county’s freeways moved a step closer to reality Tuesday when the Board of Supervisors agreed to create a panel to administer the program.
The supervisors voted, 5-0, to create the Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies, a seven-member board that will include two supervisors and five members appointed by the 16 cities in the county.
The authority, to be known as SAFE, will administer a surcharge no higher than $1 on motor vehicle fees paid by county residents. SAFE will also be able to issue bonds to finance the $3-million to $7.5-million installation cost of the 283-mile system. The call boxes are to be installed at half-mile to 1-mile intervals.
The fees will pay the $750,000-a-year cost of running the system.
