NHL Roundup : Neale Is Given a Rude Welcome as Canucks Beat Red Wings, 5-0
Rick Lanz had two goals and two assists Monday night to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 5-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.
Steve Tambellini and Moe Lemay added power-play goals for Vancouver, and Cam Neeley also scored for the Canucks, who spoiled Detroit Coach Harry Neale’s return to Vancouver. Neale is a former Vancouver coach and general manager.
Richard Brodeur made 20 saves in registering his second shutout of the season, both against Detroit.
The Canucks jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Tambellini, Lemay and Neeley.
Lanz scored on a 50-footer in the second period and on a solo rush with five minutes left.
Chicago 5, New York Rangers 4--Defenseman Bob Murray scored a power-play goal 53 seconds into overtime, and the Black Hawks beat the Rangers at New York to end a four-game losing streak.
Murray’s second goal of the season came on a feed from Denis Savard, who also assisted on Chicago’s tying goal in the third period. Murray drifted in from the point and knocked in the game-winner from 25 feet past goalie John Vanbiesbrouck.
Chicago converted 3 of 5 power plays. The winning goal was set up by a holding penalty on New York’s Ron Greschner in the final minute of the third period.
After the Rangers went ahead, 4-2, on Kelly Miller’s second goal of the game early in the third period, Chicago came back to tie on goals by Behn Wilson and Darryl Sutter.
Wilson’s power-play goal with 5:06 gone in the third period came on a fluke carom off the glass after a shot from the center line trickled past Vanbiesbrouck.
Sutter then tied it with his fourth goal at the 8:44 mark on a pass from Savard.
