Linebacker Hugh Green said he agreed to pay the Tampa Bay Buccaneers more than $400,000 to entice the team to trade him away from the last-place Buccaneers.
Green, a two-time All-Pro, was traded to Miami last month for a first- and second-round draft choice next year. Before being traded, Green gave Tampa Bay a list of 16 teams for which he would be willing to play.
The money is part of a bonus the Buccaneers gave Green when he signed a renegotiated contract before last season. He is repaying $335,000 over four years with 10% interest, which will raise the total paid above the $400,000 mark.
Green said he agreed to pay “because I was having problems in Tampa and I wanted to leave and this made it easier.”
Green’s contract calls for $500,000 this year, $650,000 in 1986, $750,000 in 1987 and $800,000 in 1988.
