A dead whale that washed up on a San Francisco beach was pregnant and probably died of a uterine infection, researchers at the Academy of Sciences said after a five-hour autopsy. The carcass of the 1,000-pound, rare beaked whale came ashore during the weekend. The scientists said the 14-foot mammal had a well-formed fetus only 23 inches long.
