A 58-year-old transient pleaded guilty in Los Angeles federal court to charges that he kidnaped a girl near her home in Venice in 1981 and took her to Alaska, where she was found by authorities nearly four years later. Investigators said Elvia Vasquez was 19 months old when John R. Altig took her from Venice Beach. She was found in Anchorage earlier this year, living in a trailer with Altig. Authorities said Altig, who claimed that the girl was his illegitimate daughter, molested the child. Sentencing before U.S. District Judge Matt Byrne Jr. was set for Dec. 23.
