Michael Cortright, a senior placekicker for defending state Class AAA football champion St. Mary’s High School in Phoenix, set a national prep record for field goals in a career Wednesday night.
Cortright kicked three field goals during St. Mary’s 44-13 quarterfinal playoff victory over Scottsdale Chaparral.
The kicks--from 26, 41 and 37 yards--gave Cortright 17 field goals this season and 34 for his prep career. The national record was formerly held by Luis Zendejas, who had 33 at Don Lugo High School in Chino in 1977-80.
