The Canadian government said it has granted Miroslav Ihnacak a special immigration permit because the star Czechoslovakian hockey player was concerned for his safety while waiting in Vienna after defecting last weekend.
Ihnacak, regarded as one of the top wings in Czechoslovakian history, is planning to join his older brother, Peter, on the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Maple Leafs signed the 23-year-old Ihnacak to a multiyear contract earlier this week while he waited with his fiancee in the Austrian capital for permission to enter Canada.
