Hollywood : Bungalow Funds Sought

The county Board of Supervisors has authorized county officials to negotiate the purchase of the Highland Camrose Bungalows near the Hollywood Bowl, a move that could save the picturesque homes from destruction.
Led by Supervisor Ed Edelman, the board hopes to use the 13 historic homes as classrooms for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute for Young Musicians and Conductors. In addition, Edelman said he hopes that the nearly two acres of land can be used for picnics, cultural programs and recreational activities.
The board voted to seek funds to buy the site, currently priced at $2.9 million. Money for the purchase might include funds already earmarked for other projects in Edelman’s 3rd District, such as road repair and park development. Owners of the property, the Jan Development Co., plan to construct a 180-unit apartment complex on the site if no buyer comes forward.
