East German driver Wolfgang Hoppe and brakeman Dietmar Schauerhammer won the European Two-Man Bobsled Championships ahead of two other East German sleds at Igls, Austria.
For Hoppe it was another success in a career that includes Olympic, World Championship and Nations’ Cup victories.
Hoppe-Schauerhammer took the title on the 1,200-meter Olympic chute by 52/100ths of a second ahead of the 1983 European champions, Bernhard Lehmann and Bogdan Musiol. Third were Detlef Richter and Steffen Grummt, 92/100ths of a second behind the winners.
