UC Irvine Women Sweep Montana
The UC Irvine women’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the University of Arizona tournament Friday afternoon, defeating Montana, 9-0.
No. 1 singles player Stephanie Rhorer defeated Ashlee Ashba, 7-5, 6-2, to lead the way. No. 2 player Haruko Shigekawa defeated Kym Boyce, 7-6, 6-4. Shigekawa teamed with Dina Trenwith in the No. 1 doubles match to beat Ashba and Boyce, 6-3, 7-5.
No. 3 player Lola Trenwith defeated Stephanie Boyce 6-0, 6-2.
The Anteaters (5-5) face Arizona in the semifinals today.
In UCI men’s action:
No. 1 singles player Darren Yates beat Hawaii’s Mark Kobayashi in the opening round of the San Diego tournament only to be eliminated by Cal State Long Beach’s Peter Smith, 7-5, 6-1, in the second round.
Art Hernandez is the only UCI singles player still alive. He beat UC San Diego’s Mike McMacee, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, and Hawaii’s Steve Casey, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. Hernandez plays in the semifinals today.
