Marc Girardelli of Luxembourg won his second consecutive World Cup overall ski racing title at Bromont, Canada, Friday, edging Pirmin Zurbriggen of Switzerland.
Girardelli, who started the day with 294 points to 276 for Zurbriggen, needed only to finish in the top 15 to clinch the title. But Girardelli fell about 20 yards from the end in the second run of the final slalom race of the season.
That left the way open, but only slightly, for Zurbriggen, the 1984 overall champion and runner-up to Girardelli a year ago.
Zurbriggen banged through the 74-gate second run in 1 minute 1.69 seconds. It was the fastest time for the second heat, but it left him .45 seconds behind the race winner, Yugoslavia’s Bojan Krizaj. Krizaj completed two runs in 1:59.66.
Paul Frommelt of Liechtenstein, with the second-fastest afternoon run, was second overall in 1:59.88 and Zurbriggen third in 2:00.11. Zurbriggen netted eight points, finishing the season with 284, 10 fewer than Girardelli.
