Loss of Jobs

Government statistics indicate an improving economy, higher employment and a “new” period of growth.
Newspapers, to the contrary, report every week that more and more companies, nationwide, are reducing their work forces.
We are all well aware that the computer, electronic and aerospace industries are very busy, but that provides little comfort for those of us in other industries.
To compound the problem, the companies that are actively hiring are reluctant to hire and retrain employees deplaced from related industries.
It is not realistic to expect every displaced employee to spend thousands of dollars and many years retraining in special schools and colleges when it is obvious that if a person is intelligent enough to serve a given function for years he could easily adapt to a related function and quickly become productive, if given a chance.
If this issue is not dealt with soon, this country and everyone in it, will be in deep trouble.
