San Diego Prep Baseball : Johnson Throws No-Hitter as San Diego High Wins Again

SAN DIEGO — Byron Johnson of San Diego High School threw a no-hitter against St. Augustine Monday in a 5-1 win for the City Central League leaders. Johnson (4-1), who struck out seven, has won his last four games, and San Diego (8-7 overall) has won six of its last seven.
“We’re happy and confident,” first-year San Diego Coach Tom Lopez said. “But we can’t be celebrating too long. There’s a lot of baseball to play, and sooner or later we’ll come down to earth.”
Caver designated hitter Tony Farrell went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, and second baseman Robert Howard went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Roberto Lozerno took the loss for the Saints (1-3, 4-9).
CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE
Christian 9, Lincoln 7--Four singles, two walks and a Craig Johnson double gave the Patriots six runs in the bottom of the first as Christian (1-3, 7-7) held on to break its three-game losing streak. Johnson (two RBIs) and teammate Kevin Pohle went 3 for 4. Pitcher John Okken is 4-2, and Charlton Lynch dropped to 1-2.
CITY WESTERN LEAGUE
La Jolla 7, Mission Bay 5--La Jolla scored three runs in the fourth inning to give the Vikings (2-2, 4-8) a win over the first-place Bucs (3-1, 10-4). La Jolla’s Tom Ruben had a solo homer in the first and an RBI single in the second. Mission Bay pitcher Sean Rees had a two-run home run. The Vikings’ Pat Tribolet had two doubles and an RBI in three at-bats. Doug Powell (2-1) was the winning pitcher.
University City 17, Clairemont 1--University City (3-1, 6-6) racked Clairemont starter Andy Williams for five runs in the first inning as the Centurions trounced the Chiefs (2-2, 5-6-1). University City was led by Deron Thornton, who was 4 for 5 with a double, a homer and 3 RBIs and Scott Jayloweski, 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs.
University 7, Kearny 1--Mike McElroy’s bases-loaded triple sparked a five-run sixth inning as University (1-3, 5-8) beat Kearny (1-3, 3-9). Tom Stilinovich went the distance for the Dons, allowing two hits and striking out seven.
CITY EASTERN
LEAGUE TOURNAMENT
Patrick Henry 3, Mira Mesa 1--The Patriots got a bit of revenge in a rematch of last season’s 3-A championship game that Mira Mesa had won, 7-2. Shortstop Bret Regan and center fielder Charlie Evans both went 3 for 4 for Patrick Henry (8-3).
