Southeast Area : Mayors Selected by Councils to Fill Positions in 11 Cities
Several city councils chose new mayors Tuesday on the heels of recent elections.
Artesia: Councilman Dennis R. Fellows, who was reelected to a fourth term a week ago, was selected mayor, while Ronald H. Oliver, a council member since 1974, is the new mayor pro tem. It is the fourth time Fellows has served as mayor since he was first elected to the council in 1974.
Bell: George Cole, who has served as councilman since 1984, was unanimously appointed to a one-year term as mayor.
Bellflower: Joseph E. Cvetko, 59, was selected mayor on a 3-2 vote. Councilmen William Pendleton and Ken Cleveland cast dissenting votes. Pendleton and Cleveland were elected to the council on April 8. M. G. Brassard, 49, was unanimously chosen vice mayor. Brassard and Cvetko have been on the council since 1984.
Lakewood: Robert G. Wagner is the new mayor on the five-member City Council. Wagner, 48, who has been on the council since 1980, was chosen for the one-year term in a unanimous vote. Marc F. Titel, 37, was elected vice mayor. Titel has been on the council since 1984.
La Habra Heights: The new mayor is Charles Wolfarth, who has been on the council since 1978, while M. Jay Collins is mayor pro tem. Collins was elected in 1984.
La Mirada: Councilman C. David Peters was named mayor for the third time since he was first elected to the council in 1976. Two-term Councilman Ben Ashley is the new mayor pro tem.
Norwalk: The council unanimously appointed colleague Bob White as mayor. White, 65, the council’s senior member, has served on the council since 1968. White will serve a one-year term. It is the fifth time he has served as mayor.
Paramount: Gerald A. Mulrooney, a 53-year-old businessman, was chosen mayor. Mulrooney, who has been on the council since 1980, was elected on a 4-1 vote. He will serve for one year. Councilwoman Esther Caldwell cast the dissenting vote. Henry Harkema, 74, who was elected to the council on April 8, was chosen vice mayor.
Pico Rivera: Councilman Gil De La Rosa, who narrowly won reelection to a second term last week, will serve as mayor for the first time. Councilman Garth G. Gardner, first elected to the council in 1972, is mayor pro tem.
South Gate: The council appointed John F. Sheehy as mayor. Sheehy, 72, has been a council member since 1984, having served previously as a council member from 1974 to 1978. He will serve a one-year term as mayor.
Whittier: Councilman Gene H. Chandler was selected mayor for the first time. He was reelected to a second council term by a wide margin on April 8. The council’s only female member, Sabina Schwab, is the new mayor pro tem. She was elected to the council in 1974.
