Whittier : Redevelopment Contract

The City Council has signed a 90-day exclusive negotiating contract with a Los Angeles firm to redevelop a block of Greenleaf Avenue across from the new Whittier Hilton.

With the completion of the hotel earlier this year, City Manager Tom Mauk said the area between Penn and Mar Vista streets on the west side of Greenleaf has become the highest priority of the Uptown Village redevelopment push.

Under the agreement, Relco Industries has three months to come up with a plan for replacing a string of small businesses, including a Mexican restaurant, a meeting hall and a liquor store. Relco will give the city a “good faith” deposit of $25,000 that can be applied to the purchase price of the land if the development proceeds, Mauk said.

The company has said it wants to build a mix of retail shops and offices anchored by a restaurant.

Property owners on the block were told of the city’s plans in late April, and Mauk said so far none of them have objected.
