Paramount : Schools to Get $13 Million

The Paramount Unified School District is scheduled to receive more than $13 million in state funds for upgrading facilities, according to Al Burke, assistant superintendent for business services.
About $8.8 million will be used to reconstruct and rehabilitate eight schools and approximately $4.4 million will go for furniture and equipment, Burke said. He said that $236,258 will be used for planning. Once the planning is completed, construction could start within a year.
The district applied for the funds more than a year ago and received approval this month.
The district is required to pay back only 1% of the reconstruction funds over a 10 year period, which amounts to about $88,000 yearly, Burke said.
The funds can only be used to rehabilitate buildings that are more than 30 years old.
Paramount High will receive approximately $3 million for construction; Lincoln, Collins, Mokler, Keppel, Los Cerritos and Gaines elementary schools will receive an estimated total of $4.3 million, and Clearwater Intermediate will received approximately $1 million.
