A 19-year-old woman who said she suffocated her infant son on Christmas Eve “for Jesus” was found innocent by reason of insanity Thursday.
San Diego Superior Court Judge Richard Huffman issued the verdict after a non-jury trial for Bonnie Tafoya of San Diego.
Tafoya faces the possibility of confinement in a state mental hospital for life. A commitment date was set for July 28.
Tafoya’s 22-month-old son, James Deems, clung to life after the incident, but died the next day, on Christmas.
Upon her arrest, the young woman asserted to a television reporter that she killed her son “for Jesus.”
