The Region : Angeles Forest Fire Burns 2,000 Acres

A rapidly moving brush fire consumed about 2,000 acres of Angeles National Forest near the west fork of the San Gabriel River, despite the efforts of nearly 200 Los Angeles County and U.S. Forest Service firefighters. No injuries were reported and authorities said there were no structures in the area that could be threatened. But the California Highway Patrol was forced to close San Gabriel Canyon Road (California 39) about 15 miles north of Azusa, and the Sheriff’s Department evacuated all campgrounds south of Crystal Lake. Ten fire companies and a dozen hand crews were on the fire line, assisted by three water-dropping helicopters and two aerial tankers, but shifting winds made it difficult for firefighters to estimate when they might achieve control of the blaze.
