A recently completed draft study of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta says engineers estimate that it will cost more than $700 million to repair or replace the levees around 19 islands. The study by the Sacramento County Planning Department also estimates the cost of preserving the entire delta at $3.4 billion over the next 50 years. About 50 islands would be involved. Planners suggested that development be limited to those islands capable of withstanding a major flood, since the delta’s century-old levees are deteriorating. Sacramento’s planning commissioners are expected to debate the draft study next month.
