Phinney Wins 6th Stage of Bicycle Race

RENO — Davis Phinney swept into the lead on the second-to-the-last lap to win the sixth stage of the Coors International bicycle race Wednesday night.

Right behind him across the finish line was Doug Shapiro, Phinney’s teammate on the 7-Eleven team, who moved into a tie for the overall lead with Norway’s Dag-Otto Lauritzen. Shapiro and Lauritzen, of the Peugeot team, both have an overall time of 17 hours 26 minutes 55 seconds, marking the first time there has been a tie for the overall lead in the race’s 12-year history.

The third-place finisher in the sixth stage was Greg LeMond, the recent Tour de France winner. LeMond, spurred by a cheering hometown crowd, had won the fifth stage earlier Wednesday.

“I really wanted to win today in Reno,” said LeMond, who is sixth overall. “I took a little risk on the last corner to come in first. I probably wouldn’t have done that in Boulder (Colo.). Winning in my hometown really gave me some incentive.”
