Wing-Walker Injured in Crash at Air Show

VANCOUVER, Wash. — A restored World War I biplane crashed shortly after takeoff during an air show, seriously injuring a wing-walker known as “Grandma Mary” before she could perform her stunt.
The pilot walked away from the Sunday crash with bruises, but the wing-walker, Mary-Ella McIlvian, 54, suffered chest injuries, a broken rib, cuts and bruises.
Officials said McIlvian was in the cockpit when the engine failed and the 1917 Jenny biplane fell into a field next to an industrial park, minutes after it took off from Evergreen Airport, where the Northwest Antique Airplane Club’s 27th annual fly-in was taking place.
