American longshoremen refused to load a cargo of rice on the Greek-owned freighter Golden Chariot in the Port of Sacramento after Greek crewmen went on strike, claiming they had not been paid and had been given inadequate food. When the shipping company complained about the longshoremen’s refusal, an arbitrator upheld their right to honor the Greek seamen’s picket lines, according to Duane Peterson, president of Local 18 of the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union. The captain paid the crewmen a few hours later and the American longshoremen agreed to resume loading the rice.
