Excavation Begins on Tehran Subway System

NICOSIA, Cyprus — Excavation work has started on Tehran’s long-planned subway, Iran’s Islamic Republic News Agency reported Thursday.
The subway was first planned about 10 years ago, and a French company originally was scheduled to build the system for use by Tehran’s 3 million residents.
Work was delayed because of the 1979 revolution that toppled the late Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi and brought the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to power. Iran’s six-year-old war with Iraq has caused further delays.
