Jeff Markland played fullback at Burroughs High, tight end at Pierce, and at the start of the season Illinois Coach Mike White had him playing linebacker. Markland played well at linebacker in the season opener against USC. But after Illinois lost its first Big 10 game, White moved Markland to fullback. Last Saturday he carried seven times for 45 yards in a 34-27 Illini win over Purdue.
Lorin Pullman has resigned as sports information director at Cal State Northridge. Bob Hiegert, athletic director, said Rocky Railey probably will fill the position until Jan. 1 while the school seeks a permanent replacement. Pullman was on medical leave for almost four months.
Kevin Burgess, who played for two conference championship teams at Pierce College, rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns Saturday to lead New Mexico to its first win of the season, 24-23, over Texas El Paso.
