From time to time, I delude myself into thinking that Hollywood has a social conscience.
Reality sets in, however, when I read such inane comments as those uttered by Cannon co-chairman Menahem Golan who, though ostensibly opposed to apartheid, doesn’t hesitate to make part of a picture in South Africa because he has “no political problems with South Africa personally” (Outtakes, by Pat H. Broeske, Oct. 12).
With a mind-set like that I can just imagine Golan’s responses to queries relative to film making in such countries as Libya (“None of my relatives have been killed by Kadafi’s terrorists”), Chile (“Gee, General Pinochet hasn’t torched any of my friends recently”), or the Soviet Union (“I don’t know any refuseniks personally”).
At least it can never be said that the real world ever intrudes on the world of glitter and tinsel of Cannon films.
