China to Keep Special Money for Foreigners

PEKING — China has suspended plans to phase out a special currency used by foreigners, the China Daily reported Saturday. The newspaper quoted Bank of China Chairman Wang Deyan as saying that the Foreign Exchange Certificates will be kept for the time being to help China’s economic development.
Rumors and press reports in recent months led to speculation that the certificates would be phased out soon. They were introduced in 1980 as a convertible currency for foreigners to operate alongside the regular currency used by ordinary Chinese.
