Agnes Mansour, a former Roman Catholic nun who had been forced to choose between her order and her job as director of the Department of Social Services in Michigan, announced her resignation. Mansour, 55, did not explain why she was leaving her $64,100-a-year post. In 1983, she left the Religious Sisters of Mercy but remained a Catholic, after the Vatican ordered her either to resign the director’s job or to leave the order because her department pays for poor women’s abortions through Medicaid.
