Laguna Niguel : Another Person Was Hit by Shots at Picnic
Sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday said they had learned that a second person had been hit by gunfire Monday in a crowd of about 100 students picnicking at Laguna Niguel Regional Park.
Deputies initially reported only one victim, a 15-year-old from Santa Ana, who was wounded in the calf. The second victim, a 20-year-old man, arrived later Monday at a Santa Ana hospital and was treated for a superficial gunshot wound in the buttocks, Sheriff’s Lt. Larry Richey said.
According to witnesses, a gunman fired into a crowd of the China Club members, a countywide group of high school and college students. The unidentified man remains at large.
The teen-ager, whose name was not released because of his age, was reported in fair condition Tuesday at Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo after surgery to remove the bullet.
Richey said detectives have refused to identify the adult shooting victim for “investigative purposes.”
Investigators spent Tuesday trying to locate and interview as many of the 100 picnickers as possible, Richey said, but “that isn’t easy because everyone ran in every which direction when the shots were fired.”
