The Walter Cronkite Journalism and Telecommunication Endowment at Arizona State University will present its third annual Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism and Telecommunication to Otis Chandler, chairman of the executive committee of the board of directors of Times Mirror, at a luncheon Thursday at the Arizona Biltmore.

The award is given annually in recognition of distinguished service to the American news industry. Previous recipients are former CBS presidents William S. Paley and Frank Stanton in 1984 and editorial cartoonist Bill Mauldin in 1985.

Chandler was publisher of the Los Angeles Times from 1960 to 1980 and in 1981 became chairman of the board and editor-in-chief, a position he held until this year when he was named chairman of the executive committee. He is also a former director of the Associated Press and of the American Newspaper Publishers Assn.
