An estimated 5,000 striking Kaiser Permanente health workers and supporters marched on Kaiser’s corporate headquarters in Oakland. Ray Abernathy, spokesman for Local 250 of the Hospital and Institutional Workers Union, said, “The purpose of the march was to try to get the talks restarted.” The Northern California walkout against Kaiser began 2 1/2 weeks ago and includes 9,000 striking employees. The conflict centers on management’s call for a wage freeze and a pay scale that would give new employees 30% less at facilities outside the Bay Area.
