Local News in Brief : Arson Suspected in Restaurant Blaze
A fire that destroyed a vacant restaurant in Calabasas early Saturday morning was probably arson, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.
The fire, at Orofino’s Restaurant on Las Virgenes Road, destroyed everything but the building’s outer walls, county Fire Capt. Jerry Dwyer said. Damage was estimated at $15,000, he said.
Sheriff’s Deputy Ronald Sanner said arson is suspected because other possible causes had been ruled out.
The restaurant was scheduled to be demolished in a month to make way for a small shopping center, Dwyer said.
Last month, the owner requested that the Fire Department burn the structure as a training exercise, Dwyer said, but the local fire station did not receive permission to burn the building.
