Vinny Testaverde of the University of Miami, the nation’s leading collegiate passer, and Jason Buck, a defensive tackle at Brigham Young University, won two of the most prestigious college football awards Saturday.

Testaverde was named winner of the Walter Camp Trophy as the country’s top player. Buck was named winner of the Outland Trophy as the best interior lineman.

Testaverde, a 6-foot 5-inch, 218-pound senior quarterback who is regarded as the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, completed 175 of 276 attempts for 2,557 yards and 26 touchdowns during the regular season. He missed the Hurricanes’ last game Thursday night against East Carolina because of injuries suffered in a motor scooter accident.

The Elmont, N.Y., native was the overwhelming choice of the college coaches and sports information directors who voted for the annual Walter Camp All-American team, according to Benjamin Tortora, president of the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Buck, a 6-6, 274-pound senior, had 9 1/2 sacks and 46 tackles going into Saturday night’s game against San Diego State. He’s the first player from the Rocky Mountain area to win the Outland Trophy since Merlin Olsen of Utah State in 1961.
