WHO’S ON TOP?

I had to laugh while reading about the billing problems in “Outrageous Fortune” between “big stars” Shelley Long and Bette Midler (Outtakes, by Peter H. Brown and Jim Pinkston, Nov. 23).
Pardon me, but when did Long become “such a big star”? Sure, she knocked ‘em out singing on the Emmys but doesn’t anyone use a calculator anymore?
Bette Midler: two smash hits with “Down and Out in Beverly Hills” and “Ruthless People,” Oscar nomination for “The Rose” and one turkey, “Jinxed.”
Shelley Long: marginal success with “Irreconcilable Differences” and the embarrassment of the quasi-porn “Losin’ It.”
Who deserves star billing? Gee, hard to tell. I hope the half of the country where Shelley gets top billing is East.
