Shultz to Meet S. African Rebel

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State George P. Shultz will meet with Oliver Tambo, head of South Africa’s main leftist rebel group, in Washington next month, the State Department said today,

Under Secretary of State Michael H. Armacost met last week with Tambo, leader of the African National Congress, at Tambo’s exile headquarters in Zambia. State Department deputy spokeswoman Phyllis Oakley said the meeting will be “another step in the U.S. effort to develop contacts with the ANC as one of several groups with substantial political support in South Africa.”
