Buena Park : Jurors Find Woman Guilty of Manslaughter

A Buena Park woman who shot and killed her mother-in-law with a sawed-off shotgun was found guilty Tuesday of voluntary manslaughter.

Cheryl Francine Clewley, 38, faces up to 13 years in state prison when she is sentenced by Superior Court Judge David H. Brickner on Feb. 13. Clewley shot her mother-in-law, Claire Wilson, 53, following an argument on May 1, 1986.

An argument between the two women had led neighbors to call the police. Two Buena Park police officers left the house after getting the two women to agree to calm down. But they received a call to return to the house a few minutes later, and they found Wilson fatally wounded.

Prosecutors had sought a murder conviction, but jurors came back with the lesser verdict of voluntary manslaughter after two days of deliberation.
