San Diego
A San Diego woman was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder Wednesday in connection with the death of her 2-year-old son, police said.
Veronica Canady, 23, was taken into police custody after autopsy reports revealed that the death of her son, Gary Lydell Franklin Jr., was a homicide, police said.
Canady was arrested at a house in the 400 block of 26th Street and was taken to the County Jail at Las Colinas, where she was held without bail, police said.
Deputy Coroner Dan Matticks said the boy suffered multiple bruises to the head and torso.
The exact cause of death is still pending a microscopic tissue study Matticks said, but “it is apparent that it was a homicide.”
San Diego firefighters who were called to an apartment in the 3500 block of Island Avenue Tuesday found the 2-year-old lying unconscious in a bed.
The firefighters were unable to revive the boy.
The boy’s father, Gary Lydell Franklin Sr., 28, has been in San Diego County Jail since September on a narcotics charge, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
