San Diego firefighters were kept busy Sunday and Monday as they battled three blazes that caused a total of about $175,000 damage, fire officials said.

Fire Department spokesman Larry Stewart said firefighters were summoned to the 4400 block of University Avenue at 6:53 a.m. Monday to battle a fire in a duplex. Firefighters were able to confine the blaze to the rear of an apartment, fire officials said. The Metro Arson Strike Team said the fire was the result of arson. Damage to the building was estimated at $80,000. On Sunday, a small fire of suspicious origin did minor damage to the same building.

About 20 firefighters responded to a two-story apartment blaze in the 400 block of Gloria Street Sunday. Stewart said six apartments were damaged and 25 people evacuated. Investigators said the fire was started by a candle. Damage was estimated at $30,000.

Also on Sunday, firefighters arrived at the 5200 block of Edge Park Way in Tierrasanta to find flames billowing out of a second-story window of a town house. Firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to attached town houses. Damage was estimated at $65,000. Officials said the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction.
