W. R. Grace & Co., which paid a reported $8 million to settle a suit over contaminated drinking wells in Woburn, Mass., was indicted on federal charges that it lied to the Environmental Protection Agency. The two felony charges of making false statements stem from the EPA’s 1982 attempts to determine the nature and source of contaminated ground water entering two municipal wells that were closed three years earlier. Eight Woburn families sued the company over the polluted wells, alleging that chemicals dumped by Grace led to the leukemia deaths of five children and an adult and caused the disease in two other children.
