New Life in a Free Nation

Kathleen Hendrix’ article, “Soviet Family Reunited, but Outlook Uncertain” (Jan. 12) was quite inspiring. When I read the article, I thought to myself that I take so much for granted in my life. It is unthinkable to me to experience such discrimination, as the Lifschitz family experienced in the Soviet Union, merely because of ethnic background. In the United States, though, they will now have a second chance in life. They will also come to know the meaning of that word, freedom .

Talking about the plight of the Jewish people in the Soviet Union is good, for all of us should learn to appreciate the degree of their suffering. Moreover, words must accompany action. Letters should be written to Soviet officials, along with educational forums and other events. The Jews of the Soviet Union must never be forgotten.
