San Diego College Baseball : Waves Beat Aztecs in Doubleheader

San Diego State (6-5) lost its third and fourth games in a row Saturday, dropping a doubleheader to visiting Pepperdine (8-3-1).
Pepperdine won the first game, 7-4, after scoring six runs on four home runs in the first two innings off SDSU starter Rich Holsman (1-1). Steve Kirkpatrick, Pete Kuld, Rich Hirtenstein and Brian Allen all homered for Pepperdine. Winning pitcher Doug Simons (4-0) pitched a complete game for the Waves.
Catcher Steve Erickson helped lead Pepperdine to an 8-5 victory in the second game, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three stolen bases. SDSU designated hitter Chuck McInnis was 4 for 5 and drove in a run with the game’s only home run. Steve Scanlon (1-0) was the winning pitcher; Doug Royalty (0-2) took the loss.
University of San Diego 9-7, Cal State Los Angeles 2-3--The Toreros improved to 9-2 with a sweep over Cal State Los Angeles (7-10-1).
Left fielder Dave Rolls led USD in the first game, driving in five runs with a three-run double and two sacrifice flies. Louis Skertish (4-0) pitched all seven innings for the Toreros. USD’s Juan Bonilla had 2 singles and a double and three RBIs in the second game. John Holt hit a bases-empty home run for the Toreros. USD’s Dan Newman (2-2) pitched eight innings, striking out six.
UC San Diego 18, Cal State Stanislaus 0--UCSD scored 10 runs in the first inning as the Tritons (5-5) avenged their loss to Stanislaus (5-4) last year in the NCAA Division III Western Regional playoffs.
