The Lariat, the student newspaper at Saddleback College, has received statewide recognition for excellence from the California Newspaper Publishers Assn.
In the association’s recent Better Newspaper competition, the Lariat was awarded second place “for general excellence” among statewide community colleges.
First place went to the Valley Star of Los Angeles Valley College.
The Lariat’s award was received by Saddleback College student Dan Whitcomb, editor-in-chief of the newspaper, and by faculty adviser J. Michael Reed at the 99th annual California Newspaper Publishers Assn. convention in Monterey on Feb. 14.
Reed said the award shows the quality of the journalism program at Saddleback College.
“There are several excellent community college journalism programs in the state, and this award establishes Saddleback as one of those programs,” Reed said. “This is a great honor for the students, administration, faculty and staff of the college.”
Contest judges this year were from the Illinois Press Assn.
