LONG BEACH — An 18-wheel flatbed truck traveling north on the 605 Freeway at the Carson Street exit apparently went out of control, plunged through the center divider fence and collided with a small car in the southbound lanes Monday afternoon.
Although the rear end of the sedan was severed by the force of the collision (photo at right), the driver, Clyde Carr Allbright Jr., 23, of Lakewood, escaped serious injury. The truck, driven by Paul Alan Rathbun, 31, of Bullhead City, Ariz., came to rest in adjacent El Dorado Park (lower right).
Both drivers were held overnight for tests and observation at Memorial Medical Center of Long Beach and released in good condition Tuesday, said hospital spokesman Richard Cox.
No citations have been issued as a result of the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.
