Strong classified and help-wanted advertising in most of its newspaper markets largely contributed to a 6.5% profit in the first quarter of 1987 for Miami-based Knight-Ridder Inc. Operating revenue rose 9.3%, the firm said. Cost controls also were an important factor in the quarter’s results, a spokesman added. Comparisons were helped by the March, 1986, closing of Viewtron, our videotex operation, the spokesman added.
