San Diego Roundup : Championships to Open Today in High School Track and Field

San Diego Section high school track and field league championships will be held today at four sites around the county.

The City Eastern, City Western and City Central leagues will hold their finals at University City High School beginning at 2:45 p.m. The Grossmont League finals will be at El Capitan High School, with field events beginning at 3:30 p.m. and running events at 6:30 p.m.

In the South Bay, the Mesa and South Bay leagues will compete at Hilltop High School beginning at 3 p.m. And in the North County, the Palomar and Avocado leagues will compete at Mt. Carmel High School beginning at 4 p.m.

The top three finishers from each league in each event will qualify for the section preliminaries May 23 at Mt. Carmel.

The San Diego State University gymnastics program will be host to the 1987 Western Elite Gymnastics Classic Saturday and Sunday at Peterson Gym.

Elite is the level from which the national and Olympic teams are selected. Seventy gymnasts from 25 western states will attempt to qualify for Elite nationals.

Two sessions of compulsories will be held, at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, and two sessions of optionals will be held, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday. The cost Saturday is $5 for adults and $2 for children. The cost Sunday is $8 for adults and $4 for children.

The Coronado Memorial Day 10K and 2-mile run will be held May 25, with start and finish at Coronado High School.

The cost is $10 for the 10K if paid on or before Monday, and $12 after Monday. Cost for the 2-mile run is $8 on or before Monday, $10 afterward.

The fifth annual Boy Scout Invitational Golf Tournament will be held Monday at Pauma Valley Country Club in Pauma Valley in Northeast San Diego County.

The tournament is one of the San Diego Council’s major fund-raising activities and last year drew its largest field with 124 players.

The format will be a four-man scramble, with prizes awarded to the low three teams. The entry fee is $250, which includes an awards dinner after the tournament.
