Floor Action: Contaminants: Passed and sent to the Senate on a 67-1 vote a bill (AB 78) by Assemblyman Bill Jones (R-Fresno) to require the state director of health services to determine the extent that imported foreign processed foods contain contaminants that could endanger public health.

Committee Action: Abortions: The Assembly Judiciary Committee rejected two bills (AB 77 and AB 67) by Assemblymen Phillip D. Wyman (R-Tehachapi) and Phillip Isenberg (D-Sacramento) to require parental consent for abortions for unmarried teen-agers. The bills were defeated by 3-6 and 2-4 votes, respectively. Both authors said they will seek reconsideration at a later date.

AIDS: The Assembly Ways and Means Committee approved a bill (SB 136) by Sen. Gary K. Hart (D-Santa Barbara) to require junior and senior high schools to show AIDS-prevention videotapes to students at least once a year. Parents would receive advance notice and could have their children excused from seeing the film. A 12-6 vote sent the bill to the Assembly floor.

Senate Floor Action: Drugs: Passed and sent to the Assembly on a 31-0 vote a bill (SB 1475) by Sen. Henry J. Mello (D-Watsonville) to make it a felony offense for anyone over 18 years of age to sell or give drugs to children under 18 years of age at school or on public playgrounds.

English: Passed and sent to the Assembly on a 31-0 vote a bill (SB 9) by Sen. Art Torres (D-Los Angeles) to set up a demonstration program to expand instruction in English as a second language for adults by using volunteer tutors and public television lessons.
