Swedish singer Joey Tempest, 23, of the chart-topping group Europe, was fined $16,000 for failing to report for compulsory military service, court officials said in Stockholm on Wednesday. The fine, high by Swedish standards, was calculated on Tempest’s $1 million income last year. A doctor had given the singer the impression that an allergy problem would free him from his seven-month military service, so instead of joining up, he toured last summer, his manager Thomas Erdtman said. Europe’s career has rocketed in the past year, culminating in a hit single “The Final Countdown” in Britain and a successful U.S. tour.
