Kinchen to Begin Comeback Tonight
James Kinchen of San Diego will begin a comeback in a 10-round middleweight bout tonight as part of a double main event at the El Cortez Convention Center beginning at 7:30.
Kinchen (38-3) was the top contender to Marvelous Marvin Hagler’s title before losing to Argentina’s Juan Roldan last month at Las Vegas on the Sugar Ray Leonard-Hagler undercard. The loss dropped him to 13th in the World Boxing Council ratings. He will begin his comeback against Randy Smith (19-8), the Arizona state middleweight champion.
The other main event matches Irving Mitchell of San Diego against Rafael Velarde (19-5) of Laredo, Tex., in a 10-round featherweight bout.
The undercard has a six-round cruiserweight bout between Andres Smith (9-0) of San Diego and Richard Howell (7-2) of Los Angeles.
There will be three four-round preliminary bouts. Fernando Ambriz (5-0) of San Diego will fight Rojelio Martinez (5-2) of Los Angeles in a flyweight fight; Dave Smith (1-1) of San Diego will face L.J. Canty (3-2) of Los Angeles in a junior middleweight bout, and Jerome Wilson (1-) of San Diego will fight Romero Garcia (2-0) of Los Angeles in a flyweight fight.
