Proposed Policy in Persian Gulf

The Times headline (June 7), “Battleship May Be Sent to Gulf,” underscores President Reagan’s macho intention to make the Persian Gulf his own personal OK Corral.
Abandoning the diplomacy option before it is even attempted, we will instead “put American credibility on the line” by committing larger sitting ducks to the pond, drawing a line, and daring Iran to step over it.
Ronald Reagan, exhorting a reluctant America to follow, has wrapped himself in the flag and is marching forward crying “the future belongs to the brave.”
You’re wrong, Mr. President. The future belongs to the living.
