The first meeting in two years between Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe in the final of the $315,000 Volvo International tournament was postponed in the second set Sunday because of rain.

After waiting almost 3 1/2 hours, tournament officials at Stratton Mountain, Vt., rescheduled the remainder of the match for today.

McEnroe, eager to test his latest comeback against the man who replaced him as the world’s top player, won the first set, 7-6, taking the tiebreaker, 7-3.

Lendl was ahead, 4-1, in the second set when umpire Richard Kaufman stopped play with rain falling lightly as McEnroe was about to serve.

While officials examined the court, McEnroe’s temper flared for one of the few times in the match. Apparently frustrated by the delay, he whacked his tennis bag with his racket.

A few minutes later, Kaufman said it was too dangerous to continue.

Raffaella Reggi of Italy won her fourth career title by defeating Anne Minter of Australia, 6-0, 6-4, in the $75,000 Virginia Slims of San Diego.

Reggi, who took just 65 minutes to win the top prize of $15,000, had said throughout the week that she did not feel talented enough to win the tournament.

“I should say that every week,” Reggi said with a laugh. “I have a lot of confidence now.”

Reggi is seeded 14th in this week’s $250,000 Virginia Slims of Los Angeles tournament at Manhattan Beach.

Second-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain upset top-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, to win a $250,000 Grand Prix tournament at Kitzbuhel, Austria.

Sanchez needed 2 hours 15 minutes to defeat the world’s fifth-ranked player.

At Kalamazoo, Mich., sixth-seeded Michael Chang, 15, of Placentia defeated second-seeded Jim Courier, 17, of Dade City, Fla., 6-4, 6-2, to win the USTA boys 18 singles championship.

Chang, who last month moved from La Costa, had ousted top-seeded Al Parker of Claxton, Ga., in Saturday’s semifinals, 6-4, 6-4.

Jeff Tarango of Manhattan Beach teamed with David Wheaton of Excelsior, Minn., to win the 18 doubles, defeating Jonathan Stark of Medford, Ore., and Courier, 7-6, 7-6. Stark and Courier are the French Open junior doubles champions.
